Overview

The Clinical Coding Trainer is part of the Clinical Operations team and participates in leading training for new hire analysts, developing new training, and mentoring staff on an ongoing basis.  A primary part of this role will be leading training for global teammates. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead training for new hire analysts under the direction of the Clinical Training Manager. Help develop new processes /new training/maintain training programs and ensure consistency and accuracy for all analysts/coders across all locations.
  • Mentor new and existing clinical analysts (I and II) in learning and applying the rules and guidelines of coding and the application of company policies and procedures for claim review and appeals.
  • Develop educational training material and /or training sessions based on analyst’s/coders quality assurance findings.
  • Creates presentations, develops learning and assessment materials and other training materials as needed.
  • Performs quality assurance reviews to assess comprehension of training efforts.
  • Organize and participate in coding and reimbursement meetings.
  • Review and respond to coding questions via the Coding Help Desk.
  • Research updated coding information from Coding Clinic and CMS and hold regular meetings to communicate new findings and coding changes to the coding team.
  • Perform analysis of bench-marking profiles.
  • Monitor and review the progress of trainees through training and provide feedback. 
  • Maintain organized log(s) of all training conducted.
  • Based on experience and industry knowledge, make recommendations to streamline processes related to training and assessment of coding team. Identify the need for new policies and procedures
  • Conduct refresher training for Coders, preparation of training manuals; conducting continued education sessions as assigned.
  • Maintain knowledge of ICD-9-10 and ICD-10-CM classifications and coding of diagnoses and Risk Advantage program.
  • Scheduling, training, and mentoring other remote coding professionals as well as being hands-on as a lead coder.
  • May have occasional interaction with physician offices or insurance carriers to facilitate clarification and/or training on coding results.
  • May have occasional special projects that will entail a full coding audit.
  • Completes all responsibilities as outlined on annual Performance Plan.
  • Completes all special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications

  • Active professional license as a Registered Nurse. (B.S.N. preferred)
  • CPC or similar coding certification required.
  • 3-5 years of clinical experience preferred.
  • Proven experience as Clinical Analyst I and/or II and/or a Clinical Quality Analyst I for min. of one (1) year
    with quality scores at 95% or higher.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of medical procedures, conditions, illnesses and treatment practices with ability to think logically and process sequentially with a high level of detailed accuracy and efficiency.
  • Proven knowledge of facility and/or professional claims payment methodologies, payer policies and/or payer contracting, along with highly-developed analytic skills. Adherence to official coding guidelines, coding clinic determinations and CMS and other regulatory compliance guidelines and mandates.
  • Ability to teach and mentor other team members. This includes providing clear and concise feedback to coding specialist for continued growth and education.  Prior training or mentoring experience preferred
  • Must be able to identify training gaps in the team and develop a plan with department managers for retraining sessions. Must be able to identify trends in coding and documentation errors, to include over and under-coding.
  • Amending and revising coding training programs as necessary, in order to adapt to the changes that occur in the coding guidelines and payment methodology
  • Demonstrated highly developed project management, public speaking and presentation skills. Ability to engage a group of people in training and learning processes.
  • Ability to teach and mentor other team members. This includes providing clear and concise feedback to clinical analysts for continued growth and education.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills to include coaching and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Computer and technological skills, specifically advanced experience utilizing MS Office Suit products
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple competing deadlines simultaneously.
  • Flexibility and an ability to work in a team environment
  • Must participate in any required and paid training.
  • Must abide by all HIPAA and associated patient confidentiality requirements.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work independently and with various teams in a remote, fast-paced, environment.

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Must be able to provide a dedicated, secure work area.
  • Must be able to provide high-speed internet access/connectivity and office setup and maintenance.

Base compensation ranges from $37,500.00 Yr. to $45,000.00 Yr. Specific offers are determined by various factors, such as experience, education, skills, certifications, and other business needs.
