Overview

The Senior Attorney supports the VP, Associate General Counsel, advising on artificial intelligence, data rights, technology, and intellectual property issues that impact the company's operations. The position will play a vital role in the Company’s growth by providing strategic legal advice, supporting business operations, and influencing future innovation in the rapidly evolving fields of AI, technology, and data governance. The ideal candidate will possess experience with data rights and AI technology systems and an understanding of privacy rights as it applies to data analytics and technology in the healthcare industry. The candidate will be responsible for advising on solutions that help our clients improve the quality of healthcare outcomes, reduce the cost of healthcare processes, and/or identify payment integrity issues. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, navigating complex legal issues related to AI, technology, data rights and data governance, and intellectual property.

Responsibilities

  • Advise internal stakeholders, including engineers, IT, product teams, and leadership, on legal issues surrounding healthcare data analytics and the use of sensitive data consistent with guidelines around AI, machine learning, technology, data privacy, data protection, and intellectual property laws to ensure that legal considerations are integrated into Company’s AI, technology, and data initiatives.
  • Serve on the AI governance committee and help Identify and assess potential legal risks associated with the use of data in AI and technology projects and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
  • Provide training and guidance to employees on legal issues related to AI and data rights ensuring that Company’s use of AI technologies and data complies with legal standards and ethical guidelines.
  • Develop and implement procedures to ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements related to AI and data usage.
  • Stay informed about emerging legal trends and technologies in AI and data rights and contribute to industry discussion and policy development.
  • Assist with drafting and reviewing contracts related to AI and data usage, including data sharing agreements, licensing agreements, and vendor contracts.
  • Conduct projects requested by legal and compliance or business partners; answer questions from business units as they relate to findings and provide advice on interpretation of the findings, including the impact on or barriers to proposed new business strategies that relate to AI and data rights.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Develop effective strategies to resolve novel and complex privacy, data rights, cyber security, and AI or IP legal questions with minimal supervision.
  • Complete all responsibilities as outlined in the annual performance review and/or goal setting.
  • Complete all special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Law school degree (JD) and active bar membership
  • 8-10 years of experience gained in a large law firm, in-house setting, or for a governmental entity.
  • Experience working in the technology industry with AI-related projects or experience navigating AI and data rights guidelines in the insurance or healthcare IT industry.
  • Experience with model risk and the responsible use of AI in the healthcare or insurance industry.
  • Experience navigating complex healthcare data rights in regulations as well as in client and vendor contracts.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and analytical skills, with the ability to translate legal concepts into actionable advice for business leaders in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within the organization’s legal and compliance department and across all business units.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision and be available and responsive to legal and compliance team members and business units in a remote working environment.
  • The ability to learn and excel in a fast-paced and complex environment.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Cognitive/Mental Requirements

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to interpret and apply complex laws, regulations, and policies related to data privacy, AI, cybersecurity, and IP. Capable of identifying legal risks in innovative AI technologies and data practices.
  • Critical Judgment: Strong decision-making skills in high-stakes or ambiguous situations. Ability to bridge legal, ethical, and technical domains (e.g., understanding algorithmic bias, data governance frameworks, etc.).
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous in drafting and reviewing guidelines, policies, procedures, notices, contracts, and internal governance documents: Excellent written and verbal communication for translating legalese into business terms. Capable of synthesizing information from legal, technical, and policy domains into actionable insights.
  • Ethical Reasoning: Sound judgment in evaluating the ethical implications of AI systems, including fairness, transparency, and accountability.

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

 

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • No adverse environmental conditions expected.
  • Must be able to provide a dedicated, secure work area.
  • Must be able to provide high-speed internet access / connectivity and office setup and maintenance

 

 

Base compensation ranges from $135,000 to $170,000 per year. Specific offers are determined by various factors, such as experience, education, skills, certifications, and other business needs.

 

This role is eligible for discretionary bonus consideration
